BAXTER is a handsome, young mixed breed male who was found as a stray in Troy in NW TN. He is over 1 year of age and weighs 60 to 65 pounds. His foster says that he is super sweet and loves kids. He has been observed with children 8 years of age and older, but we expect he would also do well with younger children. He gets along well with people and with other dogs, but he is not good with cats, so he needs a cat-free home. He needs work on leash training which he is currently receiving. He was heartworm positive when he was first rescued, and will be ready for adoption once he completes the treatment needed to rid him of heartworms. ... (Read More)He has been vetted, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. If you live in another state, don't let that stand in your way. We will work to transport Baxter if it means he will have a good forever home. If you are another rescue group, we will waive the adoption fee but you can make a donation toward vetting at your discretion. The adoption fee will help our 501(c)3 non-profit rescue to cover part of the cost of the veterinary care he has received. (Less)

lnteresting Saint Bernard Trivia Low-Cost Tennessee Spay & Neuter Clinics
Saint Bernard dogs have rescued thousands of people from freezing to death in snowstorms and avalanches. Saint Bernards were bred by a monk to be able to rescue Alpine travelers. Saint Bernards can reverse hypothermia in a freezing person by laying down next to him or her and transferring their body heat to the person. Supposedly, Saint Bernards used to wear small casks of brandy intended to warm the people they were sent to rescue. The monks of St. Bernard Hospice deny this having ever been the case.
