Saint Bernard dogs have rescued thousands of people from freezing to death in snowstorms and avalanches. Saint Bernards were bred by a monk to be able to rescue Alpine travelers. Supposedly, Saint Bernards used to wear small casks of brandy intended to warm the people they were sent to rescue. The monks of St. Bernard Hospice deny this having ever been the case.
