Saint Bernard dogs have rescued thousands of people from freezing to death in snowstorms and avalanches. Saint Bernards were bred by a monk to be able to rescue Alpine travelers. A Saint Bernard can track and find a person buried under an avalanche of snow. Saint Bernards can reverse hypothermia in a freezing person by laying down next to him or her and transferring their body heat to the person. Supposedly, Saint Bernards used to wear small casks of brandy intended to warm the people they were sent to rescue. The monks of St. Bernard Hospice deny this having ever been the case.
